What Is TDEE?

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimate of the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period. It is one of the most useful numbers for managing body weight and body composition, because calorie balance relative to your TDEE determines whether you gain, lose, or maintain weight over time. Eat consistently above your TDEE and you tend to gain weight. Eat below it and you tend to lose weight. Eat close to it and your weight tends to stay stable.

TDEE is composed of four distinct components, each contributing a different proportion of total daily energy expenditure:

The Four Components of TDEE

1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) — 60–70% of TDEE. The calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain basic physiological functions: breathing, circulation, cell production, and body temperature. BMR is primarily determined by lean body mass — which is why more muscular individuals tend to have higher metabolic rates.

2. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) — approximately 10% of TDEE. The calories your body burns digesting, absorbing, and metabolizing food. Protein has the highest TEF (20–30% of its calories), followed by carbohydrates (5–10%) and fat (0–3%). This is one reason higher-protein diets are often associated with a modest metabolic advantage.

3. Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT) — 5–30% of TDEE. Calories burned during intentional exercise — gym sessions, runs, sports. Highly variable depending on training frequency, duration, and intensity.

4. Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) — 15–50% of TDEE. Often overlooked but potentially very impactful: all movement that is not structured exercise. Walking to your car, fidgeting, taking stairs, cleaning. NEAT can vary by up to 2,000 calories per day between individuals of similar size and helps explain a meaningful portion of individual differences in body weight.

Why NEAT matters: Research by Levine et al. found that NEAT differences between overfed lean and mildly obese individuals averaged around 350 calories per day — a gap that could contribute to meaningful weight differences over months and years, independent of structured exercise. As with any single study, this figure is an average and individual results vary; consult a healthcare provider before making major changes to your diet or activity level.

How to Calculate Your TDEE

The standard approach: estimate BMR using a validated equation such as Mifflin-St Jeor, then multiply by an activity factor (roughly 1.2 to 1.9 depending on lifestyle). This gives a TDEE estimate that is typically within about 10% of measured values for most people, though individual metabolisms can vary outside that range.

A more empirical approach: track food intake as accurately as possible for 2–3 weeks without deliberately changing eating habits, then average daily calories. If your weight stayed roughly stable during this period, your average intake is a reasonable approximation of your TDEE. This method reflects your actual NEAT and metabolic rate rather than a population-based estimate.

TDEE and Body Composition Goals

Once you have an estimate of your TDEE, setting a calorie target becomes more straightforward. For weight loss, a common approach is reducing intake by roughly 15–25% below TDEE. For muscle gain, a modest surplus of about 10–15% above TDEE is often recommended. For body recomposition, eating near maintenance while prioritizing protein intake and resistance training is a common strategy. These are general starting points, not guarantees — individual results depend on many factors, and a doctor or registered dietitian can help tailor a plan to your situation.
