FFMI
CALCULATOR
Calculate your Fat-Free Mass Index — the gold standard metric for natural muscle potential.
What Is FFMI?
Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is calculated by dividing your fat-free mass (lean mass) by the square of your height. It is used to assess muscular development relative to height and is most useful for evaluating natural vs enhanced muscularity in athletes. A normalized FFMI above 25.0 is widely considered the approximate upper limit of natural muscle development, based on a landmark 1995 study by Kouri et al. that compared drug-tested athletes to known steroid users.
FFMI Scale for Men
FFMI of 17–18: Below average muscularity. 18–20: Average. 20–22: Above average. 22–23: Excellent, noticeable muscular development. 23–25: Superior, elite natural athlete range. Above 25: Extremely rare naturally, commonly associated with performance-enhancing drug use.
