The famous “8 glasses a day” recommendation has no solid scientific basis and was never formally endorsed by any major health authority. It likely originated from a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board suggestion that was widely misinterpreted — the original recommendation actually noted that most fluid needs are met through food and beverages combined, not water alone. In reality, optimal hydration depends on your body weight, activity level, climate, and diet, so a single fixed number cannot apply to everyone.

The Evidence-Based Formula

A practical, widely cited approach uses body weight as the primary variable. General guidance: drink approximately 30–35ml per kilogram of body weight per day as a baseline (roughly 0.5 fluid ounces per pound). A 70kg (154lb) person would therefore need approximately 2.1–2.45L per day before accounting for exercise or heat. This is a starting estimate, not a strict requirement — individual needs vary.

The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends total daily fluid intake (from all sources, including food) of roughly 3.7 litres for men and 2.7 litres for women. Approximately 20% of this typically comes from food, particularly fruits and vegetables, with the remainder from beverages.

Adjust for Activity and Climate

Exercise increases water needs, since sweat losses must be replaced. A common guideline is to add approximately 500–750ml of water for every 30–45 minutes of moderate exercise. Hot or humid climates further increase needs due to greater sweat losses. Endurance athletes training in heat can lose roughly 1–2 litres per hour through sweat, and in these cases electrolyte-balanced rehydration — not just plain water — is recommended.

Signs of Dehydration

Common signs include dark yellow or amber urine (aim for pale yellow), fatigue, reduced concentration, headache, and dry mouth. The urine test: One of the simplest and most accessible daily hydration checks. Pale yellow generally indicates good hydration. Dark yellow suggests you should drink more. Consistently clear urine can indicate overhydration. Thirst alone is not a reliable early indicator, since it tends to lag behind actual fluid needs.

Does Coffee Count?

Yes, for most people. Despite caffeine's mild diuretic effect at higher doses, research suggests that moderate caffeine consumption (around 3–4 cups of coffee per day) still provides a net positive contribution to fluid intake for habitual consumers. The diuretic effect of caffeine tends to be modest and is generally outweighed by the fluid volume of the beverage itself. Tea, sparkling water, and milk can all count toward daily hydration targets as well.
