What Is FFMI?

Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is calculated by dividing your fat-free mass (lean mass) by the square of your height. It is used to assess muscular development relative to height and is most useful for evaluating natural vs enhanced muscularity in athletes. A normalized FFMI above 25.0 is widely considered the approximate upper limit of natural muscle development, based on a landmark 1995 study by Kouri et al. that compared drug-tested athletes to known steroid users.

FFMI Scale for Men

FFMI of 17–18: Below average muscularity. 18–20: Average. 20–22: Above average. 22–23: Excellent, noticeable muscular development. 23–25: Superior, elite natural athlete range. Above 25: Extremely rare naturally, commonly associated with performance-enhancing drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good FFMI?
+
For men, an FFMI of 20–22 indicates above-average muscularity, 22–23 is excellent, and 23–25 is the elite natural athlete range. A normalized FFMI above 25 is considered extremely rare without performance-enhancing substances, based on research comparing drug-tested athletes to confirmed steroid users.
What is considered a natural FFMI limit?
+
Research by Kouri et al. (1995) analysing elite pre-steroid era athletes found virtually no natural males exceeded an FFMI of 25.0. Values between 23–25 represent the upper range of what is achievable naturally with years of dedicated training and optimal nutrition. An FFMI above 25 is possible but extremely rare without pharmaceutical assistance.
Does FFMI change with age?
+
Yes. Lean muscle mass naturally declines with age (sarcopenia), reducing FFMI gradually from around the mid-30s onwards if resistance training is not maintained. This means the same FFMI score represents different levels of muscular development at different ages. An FFMI of 22 in a 50-year-old reflects a higher relative level of muscularity than the same score at age 25.
What is normalized FFMI?
+
Normalized FFMI adjusts your raw FFMI to what it would be at a standardized height of 180cm. This correction accounts for the fact that taller individuals have slightly more skeletal mass per unit of muscle, making raw FFMI comparisons across heights slightly unfair. Most FFMI natural limits research uses normalized values.
